New nominations for REACH candidate list

The German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) has submitted Annex XV dossiers for the inclusion of five substances on the Candidate List for authorisation. All five substances are forms of the polyaromatic hydrocarbon anthracene.
The nominations have been made on the basis that the chemicals are considered to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. Although the use of these coal-derived substances has already been eliminated from tyres and foodstuffs, the UBA contends that they are still used to improve the elasticity of other rubber products. The dossiers, which are among an expected twelve according to ECHA’s registry of intentions, will be subject to consultation over the autumn, with a final decision on inclusion made by 14th December 2009.

The UBA has already stated that it aims to nominate around 10 substances per year to the Candidate list, and is already considering potential endocrine disruptors that it may nominate in 2010. For more information click here.
